Prison Restoration Outreach
Taking the Gospel, worship and a message of hope to people in prison.
Our story
Bringing hope beyond the prison walls
Newjoy’s Prison Restoration Outreach (PRO) began with Christmas gifts for people in custody at HMP Leeds, commonly known as Armley Prison. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the church continued this ministry of practical care. In 2022, an invitation from the prison chaplaincy opened the door for Newjoy to lead a worship service inside the prison.
After prayer and fasting, approximately ten church members took part in that first visit, sharing praise, worship, biblical teaching and personal encouragement with the men attending. Since 2022, Newjoy has returned annually, subject to prison approval and chaplaincy arrangements.
More than 70 professions of faith
Newjoy reports that over 70 people have responded to the Gospel through the outreach to date. We give thanks for every person reached while recognising that ongoing discipleship and support are vital parts of lasting restoration.
Our mission
PRO exists to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, affirm the dignity of people in custody, offer prayer and pastoral encouragement, and support the possibility of spiritual renewal and a different future. Our message is grounded in the belief that no life is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
What our visits involve
Praise and worship
Creating space for people to participate in worship, reflection and Christian fellowship.
The Word and prayer
Sharing the biblical message of salvation, forgiveness, repentance, hope and transformation, with prayer for those who request it.
Compassion and dignity
Meeting people as individuals, listening respectfully and offering encouragement without judgement.
Serving with accountability
All visits are coordinated with prison chaplaincy, security procedures, safeguarding requirements and applicable prison rules.
Our vision for the future
We hope to extend this ministry, in partnership with prison chaplaincies, to reach more establishments with the Gospel. We also want participating volunteers to deepen their understanding of restoration, freedom and the responsibility to care for people affected by imprisonment.
Prison visits, gifts and any future follow-up support remain subject to the relevant prison’s permissions and procedures. We do not publish identifying photographs or personal stories of prisoners without the necessary permissions.
